Register your “2023 assault weapon”? Deadline coming up soon

If you have a couple of “Others” that have been registered with the ATF and are now SBRs do they also need to be registered with CT.

This was one of the questions brought up the other night. The answer is yes. That form the feds gave out does nothing here in Connecticut.

Yes you are supposed to register, before May 1st, any “other” (SBR or not) that violates the new “other” AWB ban section (below):

Sec. 53-202a. Assault weapons: Definitions.

(G) Any semiautomatic firearm other than a pistol, revolver, rifle or shotgun, regardless of whether such firearm is listed in subparagraphs (A) to (D), inclusive, of this subdivision, and regardless of the date such firearm was produced, that has at least one of the following:

(i) Any grip of the weapon, including a pistol grip, a thumbhole stock or any other stock, the use of which would allow an individual to grip the weapon, resulting in any finger on the trigger hand in addition to the trigger finger being directly below any portion of the action of the weapon when firing;

(ii) An ability to accept a detachable ammunition magazine that attaches at some location outside of the pistol grip;

(iii) A fixed magazine with the ability to accept more than ten rounds;

(iv) A flash suppressor or silencer, or a threaded barrel capable of accepting a flash suppressor or silencer;

(v) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to fire the firearm without being burned, except a slide that encloses the barrel;

(vi) A second hand grip; or

(vii) An arm brace or other stabilizing brace that could allow such firearm to be fired from the shoulder, with or without a strap designed to attach to an individual’s arm;

The ATF NFA (SBR, AOW, SBS, etc.) are separate from CT’s AWB. One is supposed to comply (or register if needed/required) with both CT’s AWB and with any ATF NFA rules.

I did the reg the other day. That website it not the greatest, I may have sent the requested documents more than once because it didn’t look like it gave me any response that it was received. It did seem to at one point change and indicate that it was received, if I am remaindering it correctly. It mentions something about emailing me but I don’t know if that is only after it is completely processed.

Has anyone done this and have you already received an email conformation of some sort?

The list of what they think I have is a little bit off but not too bad. Some missing, one I haven’t had for a really long time and at least one with the wrong caliber listed as 380 when it is actually 38. At least one listed as 38 that is actually 357. But I can see that they may think of all of those as 38. It wasn’t as messed up as I thought it would be. I have no intent on trying to correct them.

One of my Others/SBRs is listed as Manufacturer Unknown. I tried to correct that but the Manufacturer wasn’t in their list. I think I now have 2 versions of that in their list, one with no Manufacturer in that field and the one with Unknown Manufacturer.

Ya the site to reg is not done well. I’m hearing a lot from others on this too. Included the forms and the bill of sale and saved them thinking its done. They go back a few days later looking for why no email confirm to finally seeing a light submit box way at the bottom of the page, yet no links saved.

Some saw this and submitted to now getting an email and others just hit submit not looking to see if their links were saved or not. They, who did not look still got the email saying submitted.

One told me he submitted and then noticed in the next “saved” firearm that the links were not there. He loaded up what they needed again then submitted. He firmly believes the others did not have the links in there even though they were saved from the last time he was in there.

I told him if it went in (submitted) then they were saved. The system will not accept a submit on a firearm if all parameters are not met. If there is no blue number under the firearm, after returning to the main page of your firearm ownership, then it went through.

Yes, there is a huge mess up on what the state (being it’s so perfect and omnipotent - sarcasm) has on file and the details of each. I’ve seen some firearms I’ve sold back 20 years ago still on there and these were sold to sn FFL.

I will say the list is an updated one. I’m not seeing other firearms that they said I still owned when CT Carry first put out s link on their site. Shoot, believe this was back in 2009 or 2014?.. ish?

Well I got the emails telling me that the “Certificate of Possession Application Submitted”. For the 2 of them. So I guess I did the application correctly or at least close enough.

So you just got the confirmation now? How long ago did you submit them? Was it on-line via the portal or mailed in? I got 10 separate emails with confirmations a couple minutes after I hit “submit” on the portal
