App helps connect hunters to property owners in time for shotgun season
This Wednesday is an exciting day for many outdoorsmen in Connecticut — a chance to hunt deer using a shotgun on state land and private land with permission from the land owner.
Shotgun season for deer on private and state property officially begins Wednesday. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is urging hunters to wear bright-colored clothing, prepare for sudden weather changes, identify themselves to other hunters and put bells on any animals joining the hunt.
Heath Schubert is the CEO and co-founder of HLRBO, a nationwide online platform with more than 170,000 users that connects hunters with landowners. Their partners own 1.5 million acres of land across the country.
“Instead of going door-to-door trying to find somebody and hoping that somebody will say yes, you have people that are already willing to rent their property for hunting,” Schubert said. “It saves you a lot of time and makes it a lot easier.”
Platforms like HLRBO are available to hunters around the nation, but Heath said that hunters should have a detailed conversation with the landowner before hunting on their land whether they choose to use his app or not.
“Make sure you know where things are and any potential points of hazard or anything you should be aware of on the property,” Schubert said.
Shotgun season goes from Nov. 19 to Dec. 9, more information and safety tips from the state can be found here.
