04/16/24 SLFU Posts Additional Information for CT Pistol Permit Instructors

CT PISTOL PERMIT INSTRUCTORS:

  • As indicated in the memo dated March 18, 2024, DESPP has created a standardized PowerPoint, in accordance with Public Act 23-53, to supplement the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course as well as any independent curriculum approved by the Commissioner. After teaching this PowerPoint, in conjunction with the full safety course curriculum and live fire portion, the instructor should issue both the certificate of completion of the safety course, as well as the certificate of completion for the DESPP supplemental. While this supplemental is mandatory for any class taught on or after July 1, 2024, It is recommended that instructors begin teaching this supplemental as soon as possible, in case the students delay in submitting their application.
  • Please see the attached memo regarding updates about the NRA Course for the Pistol Permit Application Training Requirement. More information will be posted here as it develops. NRA Instructors - New Legislative Requirements

Yep they are now saying that NRA instructors will still be able to teach in Connecticut, just as long as they follow these sets of instructions to teaching.

This was an update from Holly Sullivan on 5-10

CCDL Members:

We understand that today, DESPP stated that the slides they provided covering legal content for permit classes is not complete be accepted as satisfactory to meet approval for permit classes. CCDL made a commitment to support our members, instructors and future gun owners in this state when HB6667 passed requiring new legal curriculum. We will stand by that commitment and our curriculum is currently with attorneys assuring that it will be comprehensive and meet all expectations of the State of Connecticut so that instructors can continue to offer classes and the ability of new students to obtain their permits are not halted.

Stand by for further information.

*UPDATE 5/10: We have received several examples within curriculum that was rejected by state police with an ask that it be resubmitted with updates. However, these items they are looking for are not listed in the statute as needing to be included. If any one has had curriculum rejected, please contact me at [email protected].

The good news is that some of the corrections, particularly regarding state law, appear to be easy to do but they should have been included in the slides the state provided and were not. There are still outstanding questions that remain unanswered about other items the state wants covered that are unclear and awaiting official response.
